The Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa has been awarded with the Nobel Prize in literature 2010 by the Swedish Academy. The main reason of this prize is the cartography of structures of power and the trenchant images of the individual's resistance, revolt, and defeat which he shows in his books.
When the academy notified him this fact, he was very happy and at the same time he felt surprised because he thought the academy had forgotten him. Some hours after, he said to the press that it was a recognition for all Hispano-American literature, and not only for him and the prize must be a stimulus for him to continue writing.
Many public figures, like the Spanish king or the Peruvian president, and Hispano-American writers congratulated him and they have said it was a deserved award.
His life and his literary career
Vargas Llosa spent his childhood between Bolivia and Peru. He began to write for a local newspaper at the age of 17 and when he was 18, his first play, “La huida de los Incas” was performed. He continued writing while he was at university studying Law and Literature. When he had finished this degree, he got a scholarship to move to Spain where he continued studying and writing. During the 60’s, he started to write novels and he published three of his greatest hits “La ciudad y los perros”, “La casa verde” and “Conversación en la Catedral”. He has written other important novels like “La guerra del fin del mundo” or “Las travesuras de la niña mala”. He has continued writing for newspapers about society and politics, in which he has had a busy life.
He has received many awards and prizes before being chosen Nobel Prize, such as “Planeta prize”, “Cervantes prize” and “Prince of Asturias of Literature”.
